Today’s blog is because of a woman I’ve never met who bought Cancer on Two Wheels and posted a sweet review on Amazon. She has inactive cancer, and a well-meaning friend asked her if it was depressing to read a book about someone who lost his battle against cancer.
Here is part of what she wrote:
Quite the contrary. Cancer on Two Wheels is a personal account of Chris Haga's journey with his cancer diagnosis. He was very honest and poignant with his struggles with his faith during trying times and cited the scriptures that helped bring him back on track. That was something I personally was able to connect to and appreciate. Cancer is very much a disease that not only affects you physically but also wears your soul. Although the book was not written as an advice laden self-help book, there is so much that can be gained from Chris' experience. While reading this book, I found myself going back to my Bible and marking passages for future reference. Whether it be my cancer, my mother's Alzheimer's, or something else, I know that my faith will be challenged. Chris shared how he strengthened his resolve, and I plan to literally steal a page from his book. Chris' body didn't win the battle against cancer, but his spirit did. I find that incredibly uplifting. In his book, Chris mentioned that he hoped that his writing would help someone. Consider that mission accomplished. The one thing I would have liked is to have met Chris while he was still alive.
I wish everyone could have met Chris. So I have decided to share three videos of Chris telling his story of how God was with us during his cancer journey. This video took place three years after Chris’s original symptoms began. By that time, he’d experienced Gamma Knife radiation to the brain, massive radiation to his right lung, three rounds of standard chemo, and a clinical trial, allowing him to achieve “no evidence of disease.”
The cancer had returned, so he started his second clinical trial just two and a half months before this video, and he still had active stage IV lung cancer. You would never know it by looking at him or listening to him talk.
Part 1: (30 minutes) Chris gives his testimony at a home Bible fellowship group in April 2013 regarding his July 2010 diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer: He describes how he was diagnosed, the treatments he received the first two and a half years, and how God put the right people in the right place at the right time.
