Lung Cancer Statistics

Be honest. When you hear that someone was diagnosed with lung cancer, is your first thought, “I’ll bet they smoked”? You would be amazed to know the number of times Chris was immediately asked, “Did you ever smoke?” His answer: “Never.”

  • About 12% of new lung cancer cases are among never-smokers.

  • Close to 65% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers.

  • One in 16 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime.

  • Only 22% of all people diagnosed with lung cancer will survive 5 years or more, BUT if it’s caught before it spreads, the chance for 5-year survival improves dramatically.

  • More than 235,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year, with a new diagnosis every 2.2 minutes.

  • More lives are lost to lung cancer than to colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

  • Lung cancer has been the leading cancer killer of women since 1987, killing almost 1.4 as many women as breast cancer.

  • Lung cancer accounts for 12% of all new cancer diagnoses but 22% of all cancer deaths.

  • Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, regardless of gender or ethnicity, taking almost 152,000 American lives each year.

  • Only 7% of federal government dollars spent on cancer research are spent on lung cancer research.

  • Lung cancer research needs investment that matches the impact of the disease.

(stats as of 2021)

My suspicion is that the stigma attached to lung cancer prevents people from being willing to donate to lung cancer research. They think that somehow the lung cancer patient brought on the disease themselves. That’s like telling a woman that she has breast cancer because she has breasts.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. My late husband’s birthday is also in November. In honor of both, I will be offering free shipping within the United States on all purchases made via my website for the entire month of November. (Use the promo code LUNGCANCERMONTH at checkout.) I will also donate 10% of the profits to LUNGevity for lung cancer research.
